Southern Highlander
Established in 1986, the Berry College Archives is the primary repository for materials pertaining to the Berry Schools, Berry College, and founder, Martha Berry. School publications are an important part of the archives, especially The Southern Highlander and The Alumni Quarterly. Two Digital Library of Georgia sub-grants supported the digitization of Berry's first publication, The Southern Highlander.
The Southern Highlander
"…a school magazine devoted to the educational interests of the country boys of the South" (The Southern Highlander, vol. 1, no. 1, January 1907, front cover).
From 1907 to 1966, The Southern Highlander publicized happenings, educational philosophies, and religious work as the Berry Schools developed. The stories described the material and financial needs of the schools, making the publication a critical fundraising tool. In addition to chronicling the history of the schools, The Southern Highlander described social conditions and highlighted the importance of community-based education in the rural South.
